Project Overview
This project transformed unused, uninsulated attic space in a 1910s heritage home into functional storage, enhancing the property’s usability and value. The goal was to create a matching “his” closet opposite the existing “hers” closet, seamlessly integrating the new space with the bedroom. This thoughtful repurposing of underutilized space aligned with the home’s character.
Key Objectives
- Improve Storage: Address the limited storage options in a small suite by adding ample closet space for both partners.
- Seamless Integration: Ensure the new attic space matched the aesthetic and function of the existing bedroom.
- Preserve Heritage: Respect the 1910s character of the home while enhancing functionality.
Scope of Work
- Attic Conversion: Opened up unused attic space, insulated, and finished the area to create a functional closet.
- Utilities and Finishes: Installed lighting and electrical outlets, and completed drywall, painting, and flooring to match the existing bedroom.
- Flooring: Removed old bedroom carpet, refinished the original fir flooring, and sourced reclaimed fir to seamlessly integrate with the existing flooring.
- Custom Cabinetry: Designed and built bespoke cabinets to fit the unique dimensions of the attic space.
- Bedroom Updates: Painted the entire bedroom to refresh the space and maintain cohesion with the new closet.
Challenges and Solutions
- Demolition: The attic had previously housed a closet accessible from another room, which required additional demolition. This was handled efficiently and did not alter the original plans.
Results
- Increased Functionality: The new closet space provided immediate and practical storage solutions, significantly improving the functionality of the suite.
- Aesthetic Integration: The refinished fir flooring and custom cabinetry blended seamlessly with the existing bedroom design, preserving the home’s character.
- Enhanced Value: The project increased the home’s utility and overall asset value, making it more appealing and livable.
Lessons Learned
The project proceeded smoothly without significant issues. A thoughtful design and careful execution ensured success. No major changes or adjustments were required, demonstrating the importance of thorough planning in achieving project goals.
